Michael Atherton and Marcus Trescothick return to the crease on Monday morning, knowing England face an uphill battle to win in the Second Test.

The England openers put on 85 without loss in the closing overs on Sunday, leaving the hosts needing another 285 from a minimum of 90 overs for victory.

If they succeed, it would be the third highest fourth innings total in Test history and eclipse England's previous best of 332 for seven set against Australia in Melbourne in 1928-9.

They would also overhaul the highest fourth innings winning target at Old Trafford by some margin, beating South Africa's 145 for seven against England in 1955.

But a fired-up Pakistan outfit remain the more likely winners, especially if spinner Saqlain Mushtaq can extract turn from the Old Trafford surface on the final day.

England coach Duncan Fletcher conceded: "Although it's a nice wicket to bat on, the target will be pretty difficult to get.

"But having got 85, we've put ourselves back in with a chance."

"Those guys showed a lot of character.

"It's a pitch that produces positive cricket. We are well into the game, and batted well to set it up for what should be an exciting last day.

"It's a big target, it's not easy to chase anything over 200 in any match.

"We'll look at the first session and take it from there."
