Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed snared eight wickets on the second day to condemn the British Universities to an innings defeat at Trent Bridge.

The 30-year-old offered a master class in the art of spin bowling to completely bamboozle the young batsmen and steer Pakistan to a comprehensive innings and 87-run win.

He finished with the figures of eight for 49 and match figures of 10 for 51.

The students, 242 in arrears at the start of their second innings, made a better fist of batting the second time around.

They passed their first innings total of 74 with only two wickets down, but then Mushtaq ripped into them.

Salim Elahi
Elahi's dismissal prompted a slide
Only Essex's opener Will Jefferson offered any resistance to make 40.

He claimed the first eight wickets to fall before Mohammad Sami broke the sequence to remove Chris Elstub.

The students went to tea on 100 for four but after the interval the wily Mushtaq toyed with their frailities against top class spin.

Surrey all-rounder Tim Murtagh had earier claimed six wickets as Pakistan were dismissed for 316.

The right-arm fast-medium bowler added the wickets of Salim Elahi and Mohammad Sami to his four scalps on the first day.

After resuming on 224 for four, Elahi and Younis Khan added 20 runs in the morning before Murtagh struck his fifth blow.

The innings of Elahi featured 16 boundaries before he edged a ball to the wicket-keeper James Foster on 78.

Late rally

His dismissal prompted a rash of wickets as the tourists lost five wickets for the addition of six runs.

But captain Waqar Younis hit an unbeaten 50 and shared in a last wicket stand of 66 with Sami to put the collapse behind them before Murtagh removed Sami.

The 19-year-old Murtagh ended with the impressive figures of six for 86 from 22.5 overs.

Pakistan wer further boosted by the news Shoaib Akhtar has been cleared to join the tour.
