![]() | Pakistan punish students ![]() Anwar works the ball away for a single Tour match, day one, Trent Bridge: British Universities 1st inns 74 (32.2 overs); Pakistan 1st inns 224-4 (54 overs) Click here for scorecard Pakistan enjoyed a thoroughly satisfactory start to their tour by building a commanding lead after Wasim Akram had sparked a collapse by the students with a four-wicket burst. Things could hardly have gone better for the tourists as Akram and skipper Waqar Younis shared seven wickets between them and Saeed Anwar and Salim Elahi both scored half centuries. But they stumbled in the final session as three wickets went down for 18 runs, with Yousuf Youhana out for a first ball duck. Tim Murtagh was the pick of the Unversities attack and had figures of four for 62 when bad light ended play early. In the swing All-rounder Akram, supposedly included in the tour squad against the wishes of Waqar, wasted no time in staking a claim for a place in the Test side by taking two wickets in his first over. The inexperienced batsmen found Akram's pace and swing too much to cope as he took four for 18 in 11 overs. Waqar picked up three wickets after struggling to find his line in a short initial spell and there was one for teenage paceman Mohammad Sami. Universities captain Jamie Pyemont hung around for an hour and a half to make 18, but only two other batsmen reached double figures.
Akram struck with the fourth ball of the game as he beat Michael Brown's forward prod to hit the top of off stump and then trapped Matthew Banes lbw with his next delivery. Pyemont survived the hat-trick ball, they were soon in further trouble as giant Essex opener Will Jefferson, who stands 6ft 9ins tall, was bowled by Akram for five. Pyemont, batting at number three, opted for survival as he and Oxford's Joseph Porter took the score to 30. Collapse Waqar withdrew himself from the attack after bowling three overs for 14, giving Sami an opportunity to familiarise himself with English conditions. But it was Akram who struck again when he bowled Porter for 14, made off 29 balls, with one which cut back off the wicket. Sami's first wicket of the tour arrived eight runs later when he had James Dalrymple caught at slip by Mohammad Wasim for three.
England A wicket-keeper James Foster became Waqar's first victim when he was caught behind for nought and the Pakistan skipper then ended Pyemont's resistance. The introduction of leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed brought no relief as bowled Tim Murtagh and Waqar tounded off the morning by removing Rob Ferley for 15, taken at gully by Akram. The Universities were 64 for nine at lunch and managed to add another 10 runs after the re-start before Mushtaq brought the innings to an end by winning an lbw decision against last man Mark Tournier. Anwar and Mohammad Wasim launched Pakistan's reply with a stand of 48 before the latter drove airliy at a ball from Murtagh and was caught behind for 21. Jefferson put down Anwar in the gully when he had made the same score and the left-hander made them pay, reaching his fifty with a six over mid-wicket off Chris Elstub. A hundred was there for the taking but Jefferson made no mistake with another chance off Murtagh and Anwar was gone for 89. Inzamam-ul-Haq was bowled by Murtagh for 18 and Youhana edged to wicket-keeper Foster next ball. But Elahi hit 14 fours in an unbeaten 67 and Younis Khan timed the ball well to reach 23 not out at the close.
