| Countdown to Ryder Cup glory ![]() Sam Torrance celebrates victory Result: EUROPE 15�-12� USA Paul McGinley won the Ryder Cup with a 10-foot putt on the 18th hole for the vital half that Europe required. The hosts played outstanding golf in the singles winning the day 7�-4� having started all square at The Belfry. McGinley's putt sent the crowd wild and was reminiscent of his captain Sam Torrance's winning putt on the very same green in 1985. The Irishman was immediately embraced by his team-mates before they, along with Torrance, milked the applause of the gallery after a famous win. The afternoon's action: 1721: Torrance leaves the celebrations while his players continue to soak up the atmosphere on the 18th green where McGinley is thrown into the lake. 1716:Parnevik/Woods - match halved 1710: Parnevik and Woods make their way up the 18th, as Torrance opens the champagne in celebration, with the American dormie one up. 1701:Fulke/Love - match halved 1650:Europe win the Ryder Cup 1649: Love misses an opportunity to go one up on the 17th when his putt lips out. 1644:Fasth/Azinger - match halved 1635:Price wins 3&2 1626: Fasth, one up having lost the 16th, has a putt to win his match on 17 which stops a roll short of dropping. Azinger holds his nerve to take the game to the last. 1623: Fulke pulls his game back to all square at the 16th after Love narrowly misses a putt from the edge of the green. 1616: Furyk makes a second successive saving putt to stay one ahead of McGinley, the Irishman showing his usual doggedness going to the 17. 1609:Verplank wins 2&1 1604: Parnevik birdies the 13th to take the lead against Woods for the first time. 1551: Azinger is fuming after missing from eight feet to remain two holes down to Fasth after 15. He knows his match could prove crucial with Europe only two points from victory. 1549: Love chips in from off the green at 14 to lead Fulke having been behind only two holes earlier. 1542: Davis Love III pulls Pierre Fulke back to all square on 13 and Jesper Parnevik does likewise to Tiger Woods on 11. 1537:Bjorn wins 2&1 1523: Niclas Fasth has been playing solid golf and is in the driving seat against Paul Azinger, two up with five left to play. 1520: Having won at the 15th, Bjorn loses the 16th to Cink and goes to 17 with a one-hole lead. 1515:Clarke/Duval - match halved 1501:Toms wins 1 up 1500: Nothing can separate Clarke and Duval who go to the last all square. 1454:Langer wins 4&3 1449: Price wins his third hole in a row against Mickelson and McGinley falls further behind to Furyk, trailing by two at the turn. 1444:Harrington wins 5&4 1425: The deadlock is broken in the penultimate match with Phillip Price taking a suprise lead over Phil Mickelson. 1421: Having been down at the turn, Toms is now ahead against Garcia. 1407: Is the tide turning? Toms and Duval reel their opponents back to all square. 1356: Langer and Harrington extend their leads and are both four up - a further two points seemingly assured for the hosts. 1355:Montgomerie wins 5&4 1350: Things are looking good for Europe who still hold the advantage in seven matches with Bjorn and Montgomerie stretching their leads. 1338: Toms wins his second hole in a row to draw level with Garcia. 1329: In a tit-for-tat third match Clarke edges ahead of Duval again. 1327: Toms wins the 10th despite Garcia driving the green. 1324: Harrington goes three up and, along with Montgomerie and Langer, is looking particularly strong. 1319: Europe are up in six matches with Montgomerie, Garcia, Langer, Harrington, Thomas Bjorn and Niclas Fasth all ahead. 1316: Montgomerie is in magical form, another birdie giving him a four-hole lead at 10. Garcia reaches the turn two up. 1315: Lee Westwood stops Verplank's run of three wins by taking the fourth. 1254: Bernhard Langer finally takes the lead in his match against Hal Sutton at five. 1250: Having won the sixth, Garcia doubles his lead at the seventh with Verplank also going two ahead. 1239: The USA are up in their first match, Scott Verplank sinking a birdie putt on the first and Padraig Harrington sinks a putt to win the third having missed opportunities at the previous two holes. 1227: Montgomerie wins five and six to go two up while Sergio Garcia cements his one-hole advantage over David Toms. 1200: Clarke looks to have missed a glorious opportunity to go two up only for Duval to miss from three feet. 1148: Darren Clarke takes an early lead in the third match against David Duval. 1124: Colin Montgomerie rolls in a 20 footer on the first for birdie and a win - the perfect start for the hosts. 1115 BST: The action is under way with Scott Hoch hitting the first drive. |
