| Harrington beats nerves to win ![]() Harrington's putter caused him early anxiety Padraig Harrington v Mark Calcavecchia (Europe won 5&4) Padraig Harrington chalked up Europe's second point of the singles with a comprehensive victory over Mark Calcavecchia. Harrington, one of the few men to come away with a singles point for Europe at Brookline in 1999, was no less reliable at The Belfry. He made a jittery start on the greens, but when his putter warmed up there was only ever going to be one winner. The Irishman made two shockingly timid putts on the first two holes but stayed level until Calcavecchia made a present of the third to him. The American took six as Harrington won with a par five and an immaculate up and down from a greenside bunker at the fourth proved another great confidence booster. Victories at five, seven and nine - the latter coming courtesy of an enormous winning putt - saw Harrington move into a commanding four-hole lead at the turn. He wrapped things up with a birdie two at the 14th and he could barely contain his delight as Sam Torrance was on hand to congratulate him. The Dubliner said: "I'm thrilled. It was a little bit ugly out there... I've got to be honest about that. "I wasn't 100% on top of my game, but when Mark gave me the opportunity, I took it. "I've obviously been struggling with my form and it was just a case of getting out there and doing the best I could." |
