| Bjorn nets untidy win ![]() Bjorn never fell behind throughout the contest Thomas Bjorn v Stewart Cink (Europe won 2&1) Thomas Bjorn quietly picked up Europe's fourth win of the singles with a steady, if unspectacular, victory over Stewart Cink. There was little to separate the two as they went round one-over par when a scrappy contest ended prematurely on the 17th. Bjorn never looked like falling behind the Ryder Cup rookie despite only holding a one-hole advantage going onto the penultimate tee.
A birdie on the fifth and par on the eighth had moved him two in front, a lead he maintained until the 14th when Cink unleashed a timely birdie. As the pressure mounted in front of the partisan crowds, the Dane showed he had no problems playing alone in the sixth tie of the final day singles. Both players found the rough off the 17th tee but it was Bjorn who made the best recovery, finding the green while Cink overhit. Victory went to Bjorn when his opponent chipped 15 feet from the hole and failed with his subsequent putt. Afterwards Bjorn said: "It was a tough match and it wasn't the prettiest golf but it was so tight out there. "We both got a bit nervous at the end and it was all about making pars." |
