| Toms ousts nervy Garcia ![]() Garcia led until the 15th hole Sergio Garcia v David Toms (United States won 1 up) David Toms produced a stunning back nine to edge out a nervy Sergio Garcia in a titanic tussle in the singles. America's leading player at this year's Ryder Cup was outclassed throughout the first half of the round. But his opponent had no response to his delightful touch in the latter stages. The nerves began to show towards the end, neither player able to find the fairways on the 16th and 17th. But it was Toms that maintained the better composure for the win. The fist pumping of the fourballs and foursomes were absent from Garcia's game as he moved out a two-hole lead after seven holes. While his high emotions were kept to a minimum, he continued his bold play off the tee, the only player to drive on the tricky 10th. Despite finding the light rough, he took three further shots to gift Toms the hole. That proved to be the turning point, the European number one steadily faltering while Toms gradually upped the tempo. He squared the contest on the 11th and took the lead for the first time on the 15th. That advantage remained at one-up to the final hole and the contest was settled when Garcia smashed his tee shot into the water on the final hole. Afterwards Toms said: "The last few holes were tough just to get it to the greens. "But I made some nice short putts and hit a great tee shot on the 18th to put the pressure on him." |
