Chris Riley won his first USPGA Tour title with a play-off victory in the Reno-Tahoe Open on Sunday. He followed up his third place in the PGA Championship by beating Jonathan Kaye with a par on the opening sudden-death hole. Riley actually two-putted from eight feet on the play-off hole 18th at the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno. Kaye then had a five-footer to take the contest to a second hole. But his effort lipped out to give his opponent the $540,000 prize. Tied for the lead with Steve Flesch at 12 under after three rounds, Riley and Kaye shot matching 5-under 67s to tie the tournament record of 17-under 271. Kaye bogeyed the 636-yard, par-five 17th to allow Riley back into a tie for the lead. And he then had a chance to win in regulation, but narrowly missed an eight-foot birdie putt on the 18th. And the final hole had more disappointment in store for Kaye when it proved the scene of his defeat in the play-off. Leading final round scores (US unless stated) 271 Chris Riley 71 66 67 67, Jonathan Kaye 67 68 69 67 |
