| Sunday, 25 August, 2002, 00:53 GMT 01:53 UK Angry Tiger stalks leaders ![]() Craig Parry hit the top with a bogey-free round Craig Parry shot a best-of-the-day 66 to share the lead of the World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational after three rounds. The Australian is tied at the top of the Sahalee leaderboard on 10-under with compatriot Robert Allenby, the second round pace-setter. But, ominously for the leading pair, Tiger Woods moved to within two shots of them as he got his tournament moving with a 67. And it could have been even better for the world number one, as he would have held a share of the lead but for bogeys on his closing two holes.
Woods was furious at his finishing slip but said of his round: "I played pretty solid all day until the end. "I put myself into position to make putts and I was able to knock them down." Parry's bogey-free round of five-under left him level with Allenby and a shot clear of American Fred Funk. Then came a powerful group including Woods and Ernie Els on eight-under. And with 11 players within three of the lead, an exciting finale is in prospect. "I've been playing good for a while and getting nothing out of my rounds," said Parry, whose card contained five birdies. "I just haven't been scoring. A lot of that was to do with not holing putts."
But a double bogey at the fourth halted his momentum and he finished with a level-par 71. Leading European Justin Rose shot a one-over 72, his worst score of the week, but remains in contention three shots off the pace. The 22-year-old Englishman struggled on the greens and was grateful to still be in the hunt at the finish on seven-under. "It does not look like anybody wanted to win today and it's become all bunched up," he said. "I think it's going to take a low round to win and I'm going to have to eliminate the poor shots I hit today." Leading third round scores (US unless stated) 203 Craig Parry (Aus) 72 65 66, Robert Allenby (Aus) 69 63 71 Selected others: |
