Parry grabs welcome win
Craig Parry
Parry finished five shots ahead of Tiger Woods

Australia's Craig Parry won the WGC-NEC Invitational by four shots at Sahalee Country Club on Sunday, his first win on American soil in 15 years of trying.

In his 236th US Tour event, the 36-year-old fired a superb final round 65 to collect the top prize.

It's going to give me a lot of confidence knowing that I finished the job off here

Australian compatriot Robert Allenby and Fred Funk tied for second on 12-under while world number one Tiger Woods, bidding to win the title for a fourth year in a row, had to be content with fourth place after shooting a 68.

Britain's Justin Rose also finished with a 68 for 10-under-par and outright fifth.

Parry did not drop a stroke in his closing 65 for a 16-under-par total of 268.

Seven behind after his opening 72, the former European Tour member never shot worse than 66 after that and took charge with a hat-trick of birdies from the second.

"I had the mindset that I was not going to make any bogeys and birdies were going to make me harder to catch," said Parry.

"It's going to give me a lot of confidence knowing that I finished the job off here."

Seven birdies

Rose holed seven birdies and outscored illustrious playing partners Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson, but four bogeys cost him his chance of a sensational victory on his world championship debut.

The 22-year-old from Hampshire, who had not played a professional tournament in America until last week's USPGA Championship, said: "It was a bit of an adventure, but a really good result.

"I really hung in there and stayed patient. I've had a couple of Sundays recently where I haven't done too much the last day when I had great opportunities to do really well.

"I think I was trying too hard almost. Today I stayed relaxed and played it shot for shot. I didn't let the bogeys get to me and kept plugging away."

Woods, joint leader until he bogeyed the last two holes of his third round, climbed back into second place, but could not summon up the same four-birdie finish he produced in the USPGA.
