Jersey athletes heading to games

Jeux des Isles

Thirty young athletes from Jersey will represent the island at the Jeux des Iles in Majorca later this month.

The Jersey team will compete in six disciplines at the games including table tennis, swimming and sailing.

Last year the Jersey team claimed a record haul of 23 medals, with the highlight a gold in surfing.

The games were originally set-up for French-speaking islands, but have now expanded to include participants from more European nationalities.

Jersey team manager Hugh Raymond told BBC Radio Jersey that the squad, who are all between 12 and 16, will benefit from the opportunity to mix with other youngsters from across Europe.

The squad, which includes tennis player Scott Clayton and table tennis competitor Josh Band, will be leaving Jersey for Majorca on 26 May, returning five days later.
