Boston United cause FA Trophy first round upset at York

Defeat to Boston was York's second defeat in 11 games under Gary Mills

York City manager Gary Mills felt his side just "didn't get going" as they suffered a surprise 1-0 FA Trophy first round defeat to Boston United.

A poor game with few chances was settled by Spencer Weir-Daley's close-range header on the half hour.

Only Michael Rankine and Andre Boucaud tested Pilgrims keeper James McKeown.

"We didn't start well, then we found it difficult, and then we got a little bit desperate in the second half," City boss Mills told BBC Radio York.

"When you don't start well, you can't just switch it on. It's hard to get going.

"They got themselves the goal and then sat right behind the ball and they've done well."

Rob Scott

"We had a game plan to frustrate them," Boston joint manager Rob Scott said after the Blue Square Bet North side's upset against their Blue Square Bet Premier hosts.

"The biggest compliment we've been paid is that they changed their formation.

"The players' attitude is spot-on. I can't pick out one player who shone for us because down to the subs, everybody who played a part put in a shift for us.

"It's not often you come under that much pressure, because the teams we play against don't sustain the kind of pressure we had to put up with in the second half.

"They are a team from a higher league with some very good players and I've no doubt they are going to finish higher up the league than where they are now."

York's only other noteworthy chance came on 25 minutes, when Robbie Weir's 18 yard piledriver was blocked and Daniel Racchi drove the rebound wide.

The referee could have made a couple of decisions better, but that's not the reason we haven't won

Mills' men did have a couple of penalty shouts - a dubious hand ball claim and, more seriously, an incident in which McKeown appeared to push Ashley Chambers before dropping the ball in his area and picking it up again.

But referee Colin Harwood merely cautioned Chambers for obstructing the goalkeeper.

Mills called the official "weak", insisting: "He could have made a couple of decisions better, but that's not the reason we haven't won.

"I wouldn't say we deserved to go out but I wouldn't say we deserved to win either."
