Jason Demetriou enjoyed seven seasons with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats |
Championship new boys York City Knights have signed ex-Wakefield captain Jason Demetriou on a one-year deal. The 34-year-old Australian loose forward was released by the Super League side at the end of last season after seven years at Belle Vue. And, despite interest from Hunslet, Dewsbury and former club Widnes, he has opted for a combined player/coach role. "He feels he can play for another couple of years at this level," said Knights general manager Ian Wilson. "If you look at the statistics from last season, he was very high in many of the tables," he told the York Evening Press. "He's still got it. He's still in good shape, he's still enthusiastic and he's a good pro." | 606: DEBATE |
Demetriou, who has represented Greece at international level, scored 47 tries in 164 appearances for the Wildcats after signing from Widnes in 2004. He was given a three-month testimonial by the Rugby Football League in June, in recognition of a decade's service to the English game. And, following their play-off win over Oldham at the Halliwell Jones in September, his next task will be to cement a place in the Championship for the Knights, coached by fellow Aussie Dave Woods.
