Foyle's York City reached the FA Trophy final in 2009
A late goal from striker Richard Pacquett took York City through to the third round of the FA Trophy.
The Minstermen beat Newport County 1-0 at Kitkat Crescent in their second round replay.
York City manager Martin Foyle told BBC Radio York: "We worked very very hard and we looked disciplined.
"But there was no chance of any quality of football being played today. The pitch was horrendous and I apologised to Newport because it was very poor."
He added: "Them as well as us, you get into certain positions and the balls were shanking behind the goal."
Striker Richard Brodie, who picked up his tenth yellow card of the season and was substituted, will now miss the next two games.
"I don't think I've ever made a decision because the referees dictated me to make a decision," Foyle added.
"The game is changing so much, but at times like this it's disappointing. You've got to take somebody off that's just running around and being honest.
York are now left with more fixtures to re-arrange because of their success in the competition. Their league game with Salisbury has been postponed as York face Corby in the third round on 31 January.
Foyle said: "I'm delighted to be through and it's a fixture we can go a step further from.
"But I'm worried, I'm trying to find fixtures that we can't fit in and it's a bit of a worrying time.
"We've got to realise what is the upmost importance, but while you're winning games you want to continue it."
