Colin Walker has had his side back in training for the past 2 weeks
York City will give trialist midfielder Lee Elam another game in the friendly against Middlesbrough on Friday.
The 31-year-old, who was at then-Blue Square Premier rivals Exeter last season, also played for the Minstermen against Leeds last week.
Manager Colin Walker told BBC Radio York: "He's been on a coaching course this week so he's not been training but he'll come and play some of the game.
"We'll have to wait and see what happens after that."
Middlesbrough are expected to bring their first team squad to the Kitkat Crescent.
Certain things are in our head but at the moment its just about pre-season training and getting a good run out for them
York boss Colin Walker
Walker said: "It'll be a great test. I'm not sure how long its been since a Premiership side came here so we're really looking forward to it.
"If I'm very honest the games are just part of training. There's not much planning and preparation as in how we're going to play.
"I'm sure we're going to be chasing the ball a lot, I'm sure we're going to have to run around and that's part of the preparation.
"Obviously we're getting closer to 9 August so certain things are in our head but at the moment it's just about pre-season training and getting a good run out for them."
