York City have signed former Northern Ireland Under-19 midfielder Niall Henderson, following his release by Scottish Second Division side Raith.

The 20-year-old made 14 league appearances for Rovers last season, and featured in their two play-off semi-final games against Airdrie.

He is the fifth player to join the Blue Square Premier side this summer.

York's communications director Sophie McGill said: "He's a young player that's got a lot of potential."

She added: "He's quite a physical, more aggressive midfielder, and I think that's something we really need in our team next year."

City manager Colin Walker has now made three recent Scottish raids for players, having earlier signed Steven Hogg and Ben Wilkinson, who had both played for Gretna, as did Henderson.

McGill added: "In the Conference we're competing with a lot of teams that are based in the south of the country. We've gone north of the border and we've been very successful.

"All the players we have signed [from Scotland] are fairly young and have great potential and they've got a great background.

"Look at Steven Hogg, ex-Manchester United, that's really important to us for next season because our players need to have a professional attitude, and they need the ability to compete well in the Conference."
