| Monday, 24 June, 2002, 12:17 GMT 13:17 UK Lowe returns to Wigan Wigan's record goalscorer David Lowe has returned to the club to join Paul Jewell's coaching staff. Lowe, who scored 66 League goals and 83 in all during his two spells with the Latics, will take up his new post when Wigan return for pre-season training on 1 July. The 36-year-old has been working for the Professional Footballers' Association and ends Jewell's search for a replacement for Colin Lee, who left Wigan to manage Walsall at the end of January. "Paul has made it known that he wanted the right man for the job, a person who was coming here for all the right reasons," Wigan's chief executive Brenda Spencer told the club's website. "David is Latics through and through and is always full of enthusiasm for the game. "He is a fully qualified coach and hopefully will ease the burden on Paul, Chris (Hutchings) and David Lee." Lowe played alongside Jewell at Wigan in the mid-1980s before moving on to Ipswich Town and Leicester City. He rejoined the Latics in March 1996 and played for three more years, helping the club win the Third Division Championship in 1996/97, before ending his playing career at Wrexham and Rushden and Diamonds. Meanwhile, Jewell had also held transfer talks with Chesterfield captain Ian Breckin, who he sees as a possible replacement for central defender Arjan De Zeeuw following his summer move to Portsmouth. |
