Chile international Gonzalo Jara has joined West Bromwich Albion from Colo Colo for a fee of £1.4m.
The versatile defender, who turns 24 on Saturday, has signed a three-year deal with the club holding the option to extend it by a further season.
He is now waiting for international clearance and is expected to miss the Carling Cup tie against Rotherham and the league game with Sheffield United.
Jara, who has captained his country, can play at full-back or centre-half.
Baggies head coach Roberto Di Matteo told the club's website: "Gonzalo is an exciting, quick, technical and aggressive player.
"He's still young and has a strong desire to achieve. Gonzalo wants to go that next level and prove himself in Europe."
West Brom have been tracking Jara for 14 months after head of EU recruitment Tony Spearing spotted him while playing for Chile Under-23s at last year's Toulon tournament.
