Greening joined West Brom from Middlesbrough in summer 2004
West Brom skipper Jonathan Greening is on the verge of joining Premier League side Fulham.
Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo confirmed a deal was almost done after Tuesday's 3-2 win at Peterborough for which Greening was left out.
"The clubs are in negotiations and that's why I didn't include him in the team tonight," Di Matteo told BBC WM.
Albion rejected three bids from Fulham boss Roy Hodgson for the 30-year-old during the summer.
The former Manchester United and Middlesbrough midfielder submitted a transfer request in July, citing the desire to play Premier League football as the reason.
Despite Greening's absence the Baggies made it seven points from three matches at London Road, with Luke Moore scoring twice and Chris Brunt adding a third.
Di Matteo insisted it was the right decision to omit the midfielder.
"As a player you always want to play, but I have to respect the other members of the team as well," the Baggies boss said.
Meanwhile, Albion are close to adding Chilean international Gonzalo Jara to their squad after agreeing a fee with Colo Colo.
"The clubs have agreed terms, so it's a matter of sorting the personal terms out now," added Di Matteo.
"He's a very good player and he will give me options because he can play in the back four or in midfield."
