Greening eager to quit West Brom

West Bromwich Albion captain Jonathan Greening has handed in an official transfer request.

It has emerged that the letter was submitted last week, before the club rejected a bid from Fulham on Tuesday.

Albion had labelled the Cottagers' bid as "derisory", with chairman Jeremy Peace stating that any player exits "will be on our terms."

However, Greening has promised to stay and help secure a return to the top flight if a move does not materialise.

Greening, 30, has one year left on his current contact and was recently offered an improved four-year deal.

The former Manchester United youngster, who arrived from Middlesbrough in 2004, has made over 200 appearances for the Baggies, scoring eight goals.

Back in April, Greening had hinted he would like to stay with the club, even if they were relegated to the Championship.

"I would love to stay. I'm trying to hint to the chairman for the past few weeks to offer me a new contract," Greening said at the time.

West Brom, who are currently on a pre-season tour of Slovenia, went on to lose their Premier League status finishing bottom of the table with just eight wins all season.
