West Brom survived a Peterborough fightback and a late dismissal to secure a second win of the season.
The Baggies looked to be cruising after Luke Moore's double - the opener after a bad mistake by Posh keeper Joe Lewis - and Chris Brunt made it 3-0.
Craig Mackail-Smith's diving header pulled one back before Aaron Mclean scored a second from close range.
But West Brom held on, despite losing Graham Dorrans to a red card for a bad foul on Charlie Lee.
Albion remain unbeaten after three games as they look to bounce back up to the Premier League.
Despite leaving out Jonathan Greening they made a flying start after Gabriel Zakuani cheaply surrendered possession to Moore on the edge of the area.
He fired a speculative effort towards goal and England Under-21 keeper Lewis allowed it to horribly squirm under his body and into the net.
Albion keeper Scott Carson denied Mclean and Mackail-Smith somehow put wide from close range.
But West Brom capitalised on the open nature of the game and Moore doubled their lead in the 34th minute, converting from 12 yards after a neat through-ball from youngster Chris Wood.
Brunt then converted after good work from on-loan debutant Shaun Cummings down the right.
There was still time before the interval for Mackail-Smith to pull a goal back for Posh with a header from Shaun Batt's cross, bringing an end to a breathless first half.
Peterborough began to impose themselves and the impressive George Boyd put a cross into the box for Mclean to poke home from six yards.
But Albion kept their nerve to hold on for the three points, only for Dorrans' exit to make it a disappointing way for the game to end.
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson:
"We gave away three awful goals and there is no doubt that cost us the game - you simply can't give yourself a mountain to climb like that.
"But there's absolutely no reason why Craig Mackail-Smith's goal in the second half should not have stood.
"The referee was appalling and I knew we were never going to get a decision."
West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo: "It is a long season but better to get off to a good start.
"Every ground where we go is hostile and, even after going 3-0 up, we knew the game wasn't over at half-time.
"In the end I was pleased with the way we held on as Peterborough tried very hard in the second half and we gave two easy goals away."
