Shirtliff had been assistant manager at Tranmere for the last two seasons
Swindon boss Danny Wilson has drafted in Peter Shirtliff to join the club as his assistant manager.
Ex-Mansfield boss and former Tranmere assistant manager Shirtliff, 48, is good friends with Wilson having played with him at Sheffield Wednesday.
He told BBC Wiltshire: "The last time we worked together was at Barnsley and that was very successful.
"Whilst we are friends we're still professional and we've both got our own opinions and that is healthy."
Shirtliff has spent the last two seasons as assistant manager at League One rivals Tranmere and is hopeful of helping Swindon climb the table.
"I've not come down here to mess around and Danny's the same. We want to do the job right and get the club going in the right direction," added Shirtliff.
"We both like to play the game the same way and I'm optimistic we can do well."
Swindon have also completed the signing of former Arsenal and Everton player George Wood, who has agreed to become the Town's new goalkeeping coach.
