Swindon manager Danny Wilson seems set to appoint Peter Shirtliff to the coaching staff at the County Ground.
Former Mansfield manager Shirtliff, 48, played with the Town boss at Sheffield Wednesday, and had been assistant to Ronnie Moore at Tranmere.
Swindon have refused to comment on the potential signing.
But Rovers manager Moore told his club's website: "I will be sorry to see Peter leave but respect his decision. We have had two good years together."
If Shirtliff does join Swindon, it would likely mean a new role for current assistant manager Dave Byrne.
And Moore says the search is on to find his new assistant manager.
"I don't hang about and I want to make this decision as quickly as I can as we need to get moving with players," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"I've good friends who are good coaches and have been managers in the game - so there are four or five [candidates]."
