Swindon Town have signed goalkeeper David Lucas from Leeds United.

The 31-year-old has signed a two-year contract after moving to the County Ground on a free transfer after two seasons at Elland Road.

Lucas began at Preston and spent 10 years there before moving on to play for Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley.

Boss Danny Wilson told BBC Wiltshire: "He's a terrific signing. He brings experience, a good leader and I think he will help the team greatly."

He is likely to compete for a place in the team with Phil Smith, who has been offered a new deal by Swindon, but is yet to accept it.

Smith joined the club from Conference side Crawley in 2006, making 79 appearances for the Town.

He won the starting job back from Peter Brezovan at the end of last season, helping Swindon move clear of the relegation zone.

And chairman Andrew Fitton has revealed he had been in touch with former Manchester United, Aston Villa and Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich about a possible return to English football.

The 38-year-old Australian was sacked by Chelsea in 2002 after failing a drugs test, and has been playing in his native Australia recently.

Fitton says the offer is there for him to come and train with Swindon.

"He'd be very welcome at the County Ground to come and do his pre-season and see how he gets on," Fitton said.

"I think the chances of him ending up at the County Ground are relatively small, but not impossible.

"I think he'd like to get back into UK football, I think he deserves a chance."
