Jenkins 'was right over Trundle'

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins says he correctly predicted Lee Trundle's move to Bristol City would fail.

On Thursday Trundle rejoined Swansea, two years after leaving for the Robins. The Swans also signed Craig Beattie.

Jenkins said: "I always said perhaps they'd play a system that didn't suit him, which I'm not going to say I'm happy about, but I was proved right."

Jenkins also hinted strongly they are unlikely to want striker Trundle at the end of his loan deal on 1 January.

"We've got to take it one step at a time," said Jenkins. "I think that with the injuries and suspensions we've got we had to get a few players in.

"And I think that [signing Trundle until 1 January] was there to be done, just to help us over the next few months and at the moment that's all we're looking at."

Trundle, 32, and Beattie, 25, who will join from West Bromwich Albion if he passes a medical, were recruited as Swansea sought to strengthen following a departure, injuries and suspensions.

Top scorer Jason Scotland joined Wigan for £2m in the summer, injuries have hit Stephen Dobbie and Guillem Bauza, while Gorka Pintado is suspended after being sent off against Scunthorpe in the midweek Carling Cup loss.

Jenkins says Swansea manager Paulo Sousa saw Trundle's signing as a simple solution to his problems.

"I think that was an easy one, really, for our manager," said Jenkins.

"With the injuries and suspensions we've got it was a matter of quickly bringing in somebody to cover, especially over the next few weeks.

"And somebody like Lee obviously knows the players quite well and can settle in very, very quickly and can help us over the next few months."

Jenkins also says Trundle will experience a club transformed since he left two years ago.

"We've moved on a lot as a football club since he left us and he'll soon realise that when he sees us playing week-in week-out," said Jenkins.

"When he's there and when he gets the chance to play for us he'll see what a difference our team is now compared to what it was then."

Jenkins made clear Beattie was the more important striker signing, saying: "We mustn't forget that Craig Beattie was brought in as our main signing that Paulo wanted over the last few weeks.

"We've been looking and looking to try and get a deal for a reasonably experienced target man, which we needed - somebody big and powerful to play up front.

With a new manager coming in and things taking time to settle down... August was always going to be a tough month

"And that's what our manager wanted and at last, obviously, we're quite happy to get somebody in and let's hope Craig can do a great job for us.

"I think he'll give us what we've been lacking. I think the way we play - with the one central striker - to suit our formation needs somebody capable of holding the ball up and being strong there for us and I think he's proven that he can do that.

"We definitely knew that we needed to get a striker in, somebody with experience, but still somebody who can grow as well with the club... we feel Craig can do that."

Jenkins admits Swansea were disappointed not to have succeeded in recruiting new front men sooner, but says a good result against Watford on Saturday will make August look good in hindsight.

He said: "With a new manager coming in and things taking time to settle down, like they have done at Reading and Ipswich and so on, August was always going to be a tough month.

"So if we can get through Saturday's game, pick up three points, we can look back to, I think, a job well done in August."
