Turner keen to sharpen up misfiring Shrewsbury Town

Graham Turner wants to sharpen up the Shrewsbury Town attack

Shrewsbury Town are considering another move in the loan market after being rebuffed by Crewe striker Calvin Zola.

"You sometimes need to freshen the dressing room up," said boss Graham Turner after losing 1-0 at Morecambe - the Shrews' fifth game without a win.

"The best way of achieving that is to bring one or two new faces in. So, if they're available and they'll improve the side, we'll do something about it."

Town have scored just one goal in four games to fall to fifth in League Two.

That was top scorer Jake Robinson's eighth goal of the season in the 1-1 home draw with Torquay last Saturday.

And Turner admits that he does also have the option of turning to his frontline understudies.

Lionel Ainsworth and teenager Tom Bradshaw both came off the bench to score and rescue a point in the 2-2 draw at Wycombe which began this current winless run, while Benji van den Broek has recovered from an ankle injury.

"Maybe we already have the goals here," Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire. "Benji's fit again and Tom's not had a long run in the side yet."

But a new signing looks more likely. And, if Turner is to pursue his interest in Zola, then it will have to be with a view to a more permanent footing come January.

"Calvin has said he is looking to go out on loan if there is a permanent move at the end of it," Alex boss Dario Gradi told his club's website.

"We spoke to Crewe about Zola," confirmed Turner, after Saturday's defeat at Morecambe. "He's a good player, but I don't think he wanted a loan deal."

The 25-year-old Congolese forward, Crewe's top scorer last season with 18 goals, has now rejected switches to four League Two clubs - Shrewsbury, Burton, Southend and Bradford.
