Former Crewe midfielder Gary Roberts joined Port Vale in the summer
Port Vale opened up a four-point lead at the top of League Two with victory over Shrewsbury.
The home side had the better of the first-half chances, with Anthony Griffith firing into the side-netting.
Shrewsbury improved after the break but Vale took the lead when Gary Roberts' low 25-yard effort found the net.
The visitors responded well, with Tom Bradshaw almost taking advantage of a poor backpass and David Raven's shot hitting both posts, but Vale held on.
Shrewsbury manager Graham turner told BBC Radio Shropshire: "There weren't a lot of chances in the game, but I felt we were very unfortunate with the one that hit the inside of the post.
"We gave it a real go in the last 15 minutes, but before that we looked over-cautious, and I can't understand why.
"Defensively we only allowed them two shots on target, but it should have been a forwards' night, especially with the make-up of our side."
