Louis Dodds believes the quality within the Port Vale squad is bringing the best out of everyone at the club and helping Vale produce their best form.
"We struggled with that last season, not having the strength in depth in the squad," Dodds told BBC Radio Stoke.
"If you had a couple of bad games, you would have still been in the team. But this year, you have to play well to keep your place."
Vale are 14th in League Two and travel to local rivals Crewe on Saturday.
Manager Micky Adams has significantly strengthened the squad since his arrival at Vale Park in June, bringing in nine new players.

Dodds has been starting as part of a three-pronged attack alongside Marc Richards and on-loan Lewis Haldane in Vale's last two matches.
They have contributed 12 goals between them this season, and the former Leicester youngster thinks they are forming a good partnership.
"I think we're working well at the moment as a trio, and if that continues and we get a few more goals, everyone will be happy," said the 23-year-old.
