John McCombe's first-half header saw Port Vale beat 10-man Shrewsbury to record a first away win of the season.
Vale's Kris Taylor missed two good chances but McCombe gave the visitors the advantage when he headed home Tommy Fraser's corner.
Shrewsbury lost skipper Graham Coughlan on 55 minutes following a second booking for a disputed handball which the referee deemed to be deliberate.
Town fought back despite the loss but rarely troubled keeper Chris Martin.
Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Simpson told BBC Radio Shropshire:
"It's disappointing, we didn't play anything like we're capable of and that's the disappointing thing.
"You can accept losing games if you have a good go at it but I'm not saying we didn't work hard enough but we didn't deal with their threats.
"We've let ourselves down but we've just got to pick ourselves up, we've got to get ready for another tough game away at Darlington."
Port Vale manager Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke:
"I thought we thoroughly deserved it to be fair, because the first half was as good as we've played this season.
"We needed a goal whilst we were playing so well and fortunately for us we got it right on half time.
"Shrewsbury are a good team and we knew it was going to be tough. We were up for the game though, I could tell that by the players performance."
