Mark Grew made almost 200 appearances for Port Vale
New boys Jason Jarrett and Jamie Guy are expected to feature for Port Vale's reserves against Derby on Wednesday as they search for full fitness.
The pair both played the second half of Vale's 1-0 win at Shrewsbury on Saturday at the Prostar Stadium.
"They do need games and if we don't play them, they'll be doing their fair share of running in training," Vale coach Mark Grew told BBC Radio Stoke.
"One way or another, they'll certainly be getting some fitness work done."
Jarrett has started once since joining Vale on a three-month contract at the end of September, while Guy has been limited to two substitute appearances since joining on loan from Colchester.
Grew believes their additions, plus the arrival of Lewis Haldane on loan from Bristol Rovers, has increased competition for places and brought some quality to the squad.
"On Saturday, we had two players (Louis Dodds and Anthony Griffith) booked in the first half and the manager said that we had to take them off before they got sent off," said Grew.
"You look at the bench and it's very strong now, which I don't think we've had for two or three seasons.
"Jason and Jamie came on and it didn't make a bit of difference to our performance, which was very good."
Vale's next game is a local derby against managerless Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
