Former Fulham, Coventry and Leicester manager Micky Adams is the favourite to take charge at Port Vale, BBC Radio Stoke understands.
Adams, who has been a leading candidate along with the former Cheltenham manager John Ward, appears to have won the race for the Vale Park hot seat.
The 47-year-old guided Fulham, Leicester and Brighton to promotion.
Vale chairman Bill Bratt told BBC Radio Stoke: "We hope to make an appointment in the next few days."
