Dean Glover played over 400 games at centre-half for Port Vale

Former Port Vale manager Dean Glover has left the club, having turned down a youth coaching role following his recent removal as first team boss.

Glover, who has spent 18 years at Vale Park as player, coach and manager, has chosen to move on and have the final 12 month of his contract paid up.

In a club statement, Glover said: "Having thought about it I've decided to move on and seek a new challenge."

Glover spent seven months in charge, his team winning 12 out of 39 games.

Meanwhile, Vale plan to interview one more candidate before making a decision on Glover's replacement.

Three vastly experienced contenders, all with Midlands footballing connections, are understood to be leading the chase for the top job.

Ex-Coventry City manager Micky Adams, former Cheltenham boss John Ward (who was also number two at Aston Villa and Wolves), and former Walsall manager Richard Money, now Newcastle United's academy director, are all in the frame.

Glover's last game as manager was on the final game of the season at Barnet.

Chairman Bill Bratt said: "The club wishes him well and hopes he finds success with whatever he chooses to do next."

Vale have already begun advertising for a new youth team coach, the position that Glover turned down.
