Former Fulham boss Micky Adams is on a shortlist of six for the Port Vale job after submitting a late application.
Vale chairman Bill Bratt will start holding interviews on Monday to find a successor to Dean Glover.
Former Cheltenham and Carlisle boss John Ward and ex-Leyton Orient boss Martin Ling are also on the shortlist.
Bratt told BBC Radio Stoke: "We'll go down our list in the order of our priority. We want someone who's been there and done it."
Adams has won the old Division Three title, now called League Two, twice as a manager - with Fulham in 1997 and Brighton four years later.
He also led Leicester to the Premier League in 2003.
