Yates won promotion to the Football League with Morecambe in 2007
Adam Yates has told BBC Radio Stoke that a deal to sign for League Two side Port Vale would depend on who is appointed as the club's new manager.
Vale are understood to have agreed, in principle, a deal to sign the 26-year-old from Morecambe.
"I don't want to be in a situation where I've been signed by the chairman or the board, and then a manager comes in and doesn't rate me," said Yates.
"If a manager comes in and wants me in their squad, then I would sign."
He added: "It's definitely a place where I would like to play."
Yates, a former trainee at Crewe Alexandra, has been released by the Shrimps after three successful years at Christie Park.
He was part of the Morecambe team that won promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club's history in 2007.
The Valiants have yet to appoint a successor to Dean Glover, who left his role as manager on 2 May, with John Ward and Micky Adams the main contenders to take over.
