Ince won the League Two championship with MK Dons in 2008
Former Blackburn Rovers manager Paul Ince is among the candidates to replace Dean Glover at League Two side Port Vale, reports BBC Radio Stoke.
Glover will leave his role as manager at the end of the season, and Ince, who was sacked as Rovers boss in December, is on chairman Bill Bratt's shortlist.
When asked if Ince was a contender for the job, Bratt said: "If he'll come for what we can pay him, then yes.
"We'll be approaching people that we think might be interested."
Ince has experienced success at the lower levels of the Football League in his relatively short managerial career.
He guided Macclesfield Town to safety from what appeared to be certain relegation to the Conference in 2007, and then took MK Dons to promotion from the same division in 2008.
That success helped the former England captain, 41, become the first black English manager in the Premier League when he took over at Blackburn in the summer of 2008.
However, his reign at Ewood Park lasted just 21 games, with Rovers languishing in the relegation zone when he was dismissed.
Former Cheltenham and Carlisle manager John Ward is also on the list of people that the Vale board will look to target.
Bratt added: "We've had three managers recently where it's been their first managerial job, and it hasn't worked out.
Dean has been offered another role within the club, and we hope he stays because he's a man that we don't want to lose
Port Vale chairman Bill Bratt
"We've got to look now for someone with experience, people who have done the job before, people who know players in the bottom two divisions, and have got contacts throughout the game."
Glover, 45, was told on Thursday that he would not be manager of Port Vale beyond the final game of the season against Barnet.
Supporters have protested after several home games asking for Glover to be removed from his position.
He has won 11 and lost 19 of his 38 matches in charge at Vale Park, and he has been offered a coaching role with the club's youth team when his tenure as manager of the first team comes to an end.
"Dean has been offered another role within the club, and we hope he stays because he's a man that we don't want to lose," said Bratt.
