Dean Glover's side lie 18th in the League Two table
Port Vale manager Dean Glover reserved special praise for young striker James Lawrie after he scored on his return to the starting line-up against Bury.
Lawrie, 18, made his first start for over a month and celebrated with the opening goal in a 1-1 draw.
Glover told BBC Radio Stoke: "He was excellent. He's been chomping at the bit to get into the team and he's taken his chance.
"He's a clever player and we've got a great prospect with James at the club."
Lawrie, a Northern Ireland Under-21 international, had only previously scored once for Vale, in a 3-0 win against Chester in January.
Glover was pleased with the way his players acquitted themselves against a team that lay second in League Two before kick-off.
"We worked very hard in the first half and deserved to take the lead," said Glover. "We made them look ordinary, we utilised our strengths and we played to them well.
"I think Bury dominated the second half, but we'll learn for that and we can take some confidence into the Aldershot game on Tuesday."
