Byron Moore equalised two minutes from time as Joe Royle was kept waiting for his first win since rejoining Oldham.
Royle's men had early chances as Reuben Hazell blazed over and both Chris Taylor and Danny Whitaker went close.
Hazell opened the scoring, however, when he headed home Deane Smalley's right-wing cross, but Oldham sat back and Crewe dominated after the break.
Calvin Zola missed a sitter, but Moore seized on poor defending to calmly slot inside the far post from 12 yards.
