Bury maintained their hold on the final automatic promotion spot after Elliott Bennett's header cancelled out James Lawrie's 57th-minute opener.

Port Vale drew first blood when the Bury goalkeeper Wayne Brown rushed from his area to head away a long ball.

Teenage striker Lawrie beat Brown to the ball and steered a long-range effort over the stranded keeper's head.

But Bennett nodded in David Buchanan's far-post cross before Bury pushed unsuccessfully for a late winner.
