Day is a product of Peterborough's youth system

Peterborough United defender Jamie Day expects to be fully fit come the start of the new season.

The 23-year-old has been out for almost a year after undergoing surgery to correct a back problem.

Day told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "If I can have a good pre-season, I'll be fit and ready for the start of the season away at Derby.

"Hopefully I can force my way back into the manager's plans, push on from there and play a part in the Championship."

Day was a virtual ever-present at left back in Darren Ferguson's first full season at London Road, but played just five matches as Posh won promotion from League One last season.

"It's not nice to miss out on such a successful season, but I'm still only 23 with a lot of football left to play," Day said.

Ferguson has already made three summer signings with Tommy Rowe, Toumani Diagouraga and Lee Frecklington all permanent deals.

The Championship has a reputation for being open and unpredictable, and Day believes Posh have every chance of doing well.

"All we know is that we can only concentrate on what we're doing and look forward to the season," he said.

"There might be some upsets and there might be some teams up the top that you wouldn't expect, and it would be great if it could be us."

Meanwhile, the club have confirmed they had bids rejected for Livingston's Leigh Griffiths and Oli Johnson from Stockport, but have since ended their interest.

They will also not be pursuing Grimby's Ryan Bennett after having two bids rejected.
