I never doubted my fitness - Day

Jamie Day
Day has made five League One appearances this season

Peterborough United left-back Jamie Day says he never thought his career was over after stepping up his recovery from back surgery.

The 22-year-old went under the knife in November last year to solve a problem with nerves in his left leg.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I'm still young and healthy and I knew I'd be fine.

"I've always known I'd come back from it. There was a worry at times but I've stayed positive like anyone would."

Day has been on the sidelines for five months and is now stepping up his rehabilitation by taking part in first-team training.

"The body's been fine. Mentally it's just brilliant to be back in the swing of things," he said.

"Just knowing that this is the start of my rehab and where I need to be is brilliant."

Despite feeling no adverse effects of being out on the training pitch the Posh youth product says it is too early to consider a first-team return.

"Missing most of the season already I kind of knew before the surgery that I'd be not playing again this season. It was just something I got my head around a long time ago."

Ahead of the top-of-the-table clash with Leicester on Saturday boss Darren Ferguson will check on the fitness of centre-half Craig Morgan after he was withdrawn from the Wales squad.

Posh will also be without long-term injury victim Lee Frecklington in midfield.
