Posh left-back Day out for season

Jamie Day
Day has made five League One appearances this season

Peterborough United left-back Jamie Day will miss the rest of the season after being told he needs a back operation that will keep him out for nine months.

The 22-year-old has been suffering with back problems for the last month and was advised he needed surgery by a specialist this week.

Day told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I've known I've had a problem since the start of the season.

"I've just been trying to play through it, and try and kid myself really."

Describing the nature of the injury, Day said: "I was getting nerve trouble down the back of my leg which has been affecting my training and performances since the start of the season.

"When I had the scans it showed that the bottom of my vertebrae is slightly displaced, and the only way to cure it is to operate on it."

Day admitted he faces complicated treatment, but insisted he was remaining positive for his future prospects in the game.

He said: "It took a few days for me to accept that I would be out for the majority of the season, but the gaffer and the specialist have told me I will come back stronger from it."

Posh manager Darren Ferguson said: "It is devastating news for the club and for Jamie.

"I have spoken with him and he is very down, but he will bounce back."
