Potter set for pre-season return

Cambridge United goalkeeper Danny Potter will not need surgery on the knee injury that kept him out of the Blue Square Premier play-off final.

Potter missed the defeat by Torquay after suffering cartilage damage.

The 30-year-old told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I've been resting throughout the summer and should be right for pre-season.

"Everything feels good, there's no pain now, but I'll probably take it easier during the first week."

Potter was replaced for the 2-0 Wembley defeat by England C international Adam Bartlett, who joined on an emergency loan from Kidderminster the day before the game.

Bartlett seems unlikely to return to the Abbey - despite being released by Harriers - as he would expect to be handed the number one shirt.

However, Potter says it is important that the U's invest in a second keeper.

"It shouldn't be a case of just getting someone to cover in case of injury, every player needs to be pushed," he said.

"I've been pushed for the last two years with the likes of Aaron Grundy and it's good to have competition for places."

Meanwhile, Potter has confirmed he is fully committed to the U's and has no interest in moving elsewhere.

"Cambridge is a huge club and I've never had any desire to leave, I'm just concentrating on being fit and ready to go come the start of the season," he said.
