Ferguson wants settled defence

Ferguson is hoping to win back-to-back promotions with Peterborough

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson believes a settled back-four will be key if Posh are to mount a real promotion challenge in League One.

Posh have conceded 11 goals in their last five league matches.

And Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I've been forced to change my defence too much through injuries and suspensions.

"I don't like doing it, but I had no choice and I had to do it yet again on Saturday against Yeovil.

Left-back Tommy Williams has been out for over a month after undergoing knee surgery whilst Craig Morgan has been struggling with a toe injury in recent weeks.

Ferguson has brought in Manchester United defender James Chester on loan, but right-back Russell Martin was forced into the centre on Saturday with utility man Charlie Lee picking up an early injury.

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis has come under fire from fans following a string of errors and Ferguson says a constantly changing back four has not helped his young stopper over recent weeks.

"We've got a real goal threat in the team, but we've got to start getting clean sheets and that's as a whole team, not just Joe," he said.

Posh are at Tranmere on Tuesday and hope to have Chester, Lee and midfielder Lee Frecklington back and available.

With 16 matches until the end of the season, Ferguson knows what his side need to do.

"We're seven points behind the MK Dons and we've got to make sure that the gap doesn't get bigger, but also try and get closer," he said.
