Parkinson closes in on U's return

Midfielder Andy Parkinson could return to first-team action for Cambridge United in the next two weeks.

The 29-year-old, who arrived at the Abbey last summer, has been out for over six months with a cruciate knee ligament injury picked up in training.

Parkinson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "The knee feels fine and I'm not match fit but my basic fitness is there.

"I feel like I'm nearly ready to be back involved in some capacity."

Parkinson joined the U's after leaving Notts County but has made just one league appearance for Gary Brabin's side.

The former Sheffield United and Grimsby star admits he was concerned that his career may be over when he originally suffered the injury.

"Initially I feared I wouldn't come back as the cruciate injury is synonymous with being the worst injury in football and I was aware of that," he said.

"But I was quite fortunate in that my injury was an isolated tear as you can damage other ligaments."
