Former Oxford United captain Adam Murray has left the Kassam Stadium club by mutual consent.

The 28-year-old midfielder joined the U's in 2008 was unable to successfully relocate his family in Derbyshire to within a commutable distance of Oxford.

United chairman Kelvin Thomas said: "It is with a heavy heart that we have had to come to this decision.

"Adam is a good player and did really well for us at the beginning of last season, and in previous seasons."

He continued: "Unfortunately Adam wasn't involved in the final promotion push due to injury, but we do feel that our decision to have players live close has been justified.

We have worked very hard to change the mentality here at the club and we now have the players all living within a reasonable distance

"Adam has made a decision to put his family first, which as a family-orientated club we fully understand and appreciate.

"Our problem is that we have worked very hard to change the mentality here at the club and we now have the players all living within a reasonable distance.

"We just feel that Derby is too far to be travelling even a few days a week."

The former Derby and Mansfield player joined Oxford in 2008 and made 88 Blue Square Premier appearances, although a back injury ended his season in January.
