Doherty led the team to their recent 1-0 win over QPR
Norwich City have named experienced defender Gary Doherty as their club captain after Mark Fotheringham was stripped of the armband.
After seeing Fotheringham react badly to being substituted, Canaries boss Bryan Gunn sees the Republic of Ireland man, 29, is the perfect replacement.
Gunn told BBC Radio Norfolk: "Doc's respected within the dressing room - it's a good opportunity for him.
"We hope for the rest of the season, he'll be an inspirational leader."
Sammy Clingan has been appointed the club's vice-captain, while Fotheringham's future with the club remains unclear.
Gunn continued: "Mark's under contract until the end of the season and we've had a chat and decided this is the best way forward.
"Mark will be available for selection should we require his services, and we will continue to have him in and around training until further notice."
Gunn said he had to make the move, given the recent negative reaction to the former Celtic player from certain sections of the crowd at Carrow Road.
"He felt that every time he went on the pitch and there was a misplaced pass, there's a section of the crowd that would vent their anger at that," he said.
"Those noises would get louder and louder and it had an affect on the team," he added.
