Northampton Town chairman David Cardoza says he will move swiftly to appoint a new manager if circumstances demand it.
The team have lost three games under caretaker boss Ian Sampson.
Cardoza told BBC Radio Northampton: "He's giving it everything. The players want him and a large chunk of our supporters would want him in, on merit.
"But I have to make a decision that's right for all of us. If the worst comes to the worst, the situation will get dealt with very quickly."
He added: "We've got to turn it around quickly. I'm not concerned about relegation but our situation is quite embarrassing.
"It's not a popularity contest. I'll make the hard decision, whatever is right for our football club."
