Northampton Town manager Stuart Gray says he is disappointed with how Danny Jackman's transfer to Gillingham had been conducted.
The 26-year-old moved to the Gills on Tuesday and played against Blackburn in the Carling Cup the same night.
"I'm very disappointed for the supporters and for the team, we're losing a very good player.
"It's just left a bitter taste how it's finished," the Cobblers boss told BBC Radio Northampton.
He added: "All credit to him for the service he's given, he was very popular with supporters here.
The 26-year-old had told BBC Radio Northampton prior to the Cobblers game with Bournemouth on Saturday that he might need an operation on his knee.
Gray is unhappy with Jackman's substitute appearance for the Gills.
"Danny's failed two fitness tests for us, and then suddenly he's fit to play for Gillingham," said Gray.
"It's finished now and we move on. I'm just disappointed that he didn't turn out for us."
