Eastbourne Borough striker Nathan Crabb has been ruled out indefinitely following scans which identified a problem with his heart.
After experiencing breathing problems, the 24-year-old, who has netted once for Borough this season, admitted himself to an Eastbourne Hospital.
Crabb told the Eastbourne Herald: "They wanted to rule a couple of things out just as a precaution really.
"They said I've got a thickening of the heart," he added.
"I've been playing football since the age of six and over those 18 years I've played a lot of sport so that might have had an effect," said Crabb, who is in his third season with Eastbourne.
Assistant manager Nick Greenwood said: "It is something that cannot be rushed and we have to follow medical advice.
"Hopefully it is nothing too serious and he will be back in a Borough shirt as soon as possible."
Doctors have banned Crabb from physical exercise until further tests have been carried out.
