John Brayford enjoyed being captain of Crewe Alexandra
John Brayford joined Crewe from Burton in September 2008 for 60,000
Crewe defender John Brayford said he enjoyed the extra responsibility of leading the team in their 2-1 victory over his former club Burton on Friday.
The 22-year-old right-back was given the armband by manager Dario Gradi in the absence of injured duo Mat Mitchel-King and Steven Schumacher.
Brayford told BBC Radio Stoke: "It was great when I got told I would be captain, especially back at Burton.
"I tried to look after the younger lads like people have done to me."
He continued: "Whether a captain shouts or is a bit quiet, it's about leading from the front. If I keep the armband, I think it's best to do that."
Brayford signed for Crewe from Burton, then a non-league club, last season for £60,000 and went on to win the player of the year award iwith the Alex.
"I was pleased for him," manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke. "John would have been the captain anyway, whether it was here or not.
"He's not going to be a captain who shouts or be very direct, but he leads by example. We'll direct things on the sideline, as long as John leads by example on the pitch."
Crewe won for only the second time in nine matches thanks to goals from Shaun Miller and Clayton Donaldson.
